Inside the COVID-19 PCR Test
The COVID-19 PCR Test in Dubai looks for the genetic material of SARS-CoV-2 itself, using real-time reverse-transcription PCR (RT-PCR): the method laboratories treat as the reference standard. One nasal swab is all it takes, and the answer is qualitative: the virus was either detected in that sample or it was not. It is written for anyone with symptoms such as fever, sore throat, a new cough or a change in smell, anyone who has been in close contact with a confirmed case, and anyone who needs a laboratory-issued result rather than a strip read at home.
PCR earns its standing on sensitivity. It copies any viral genetic material in the sample many times over, so it can find an infection early and at levels a rapid antigen strip would miss, which is why a PCR is often used to check a negative home test in someone who clearly has symptoms. The same sensitivity has a flip side worth knowing: PCR can keep detecting fragments of viral genetic material for weeks after you have recovered and are no longer infectious.
Collection is a single nasal swab, over in moments, with no fasting and nothing to prepare. Free home sample collection is available anywhere in Dubai, 7 days a week, and a lab visit is equally available. Results are released within 24 hours as a physician-reviewed Smart Report.
Read the result alongside how you feel. Detected means SARS-CoV-2 was present in that sample, and your doctor advises on treatment and on staying away from others. Not detected reflects that swab at that moment, so if symptoms build over the following days, test again rather than assuming the first answer still holds. If you need the report for travel, ask us whether the report format meets your airline's requirement before you book.

1 biomarker, fully explained
From booking to answers in a few days
- 1
One nasal swab, no preparation
Nothing to fast for and nothing to stop beforehand. Eat, drink and take your usual medication as normal; the swab itself takes only moments and is uncomfortable rather than painful.
- 2
At home or at the lab, 7 days a week
A DHA-licensed member of our collection team comes to your home or office anywhere in Dubai at no extra cost, or you visit the laboratory. Same swab, same method, same turnaround either way.
- 3
Real-time RT-PCR in the laboratory
The sample is processed by real-time reverse-transcription PCR, which copies any SARS-CoV-2 genetic material present until there is enough of it to measure reliably.
- 4
Report released within 24 hours
A physician reviews the result before release. Your Smart Report states whether SARS-CoV-2 was detected, names the method and the sample taken, and is yours to share as you need.
Frequently asked questions
It detects the genetic material of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, from a single nasal swab by real-time RT-PCR. The report is qualitative: the virus was either detected in that sample or it was not. It does not measure antibodies or tell you about a past infection.
An antigen strip looks for viral proteins and needs a reasonable amount of virus present to turn positive. PCR copies viral genetic material many times over first, so it picks up infection earlier and at far lower levels. That is why a PCR is often used to check a negative home test in someone with clear symptoms.
Not immediately. The virus needs time to multiply in the nose and throat, so a swab taken within a day of contact can be negative in someone who later tests positive. Without symptoms, waiting a few days after the exposure gives a more meaningful answer; if symptoms appear sooner, test then.
PCR can keep finding fragments of viral genetic material for weeks after recovery, when no intact, transmissible virus remains. A late positive in someone who has clearly improved usually reflects that rather than a fresh infection, and your doctor decides whether it changes anything.
That no SARS-CoV-2 genetic material was found in the sample you gave, at the moment you gave it. If you were swabbed very early after an exposure, or your symptoms worsen over the following days, repeat the test rather than relying on the earlier answer.
No. This is a single-target PCR that answers whether SARS-CoV-2 is present. Naming a variant needs genomic sequencing, which is a public-health laboratory activity rather than a routine clinical test, and it would not change how an ordinary infection is managed.
It is brief and uncomfortable rather than painful: the swab sits in the nostril for a few seconds and can make your eyes water. Tell the collector if you have had recent nasal surgery or frequent nosebleeds, so they can take the sample gently.
It depends on why you are testing. A documented result matters when you live or work with vulnerable people, when a clinician needs to confirm the cause before treating, or when someone requires it in writing. For mild symptoms with none of those in play, your doctor may simply advise rest and fluids.
We cannot speak for individual airlines or destinations, and their requirements change. The report is a laboratory-issued RT-PCR result naming the test performed and the sample taken: ask us whether that report format meets your airline's requirement before you book the appointment.
AED 199 covers the swab, the RT-PCR run and the physician-reviewed Smart Report, released within 24 hours of the sample reaching the laboratory. Free home collection anywhere in Dubai is included, 7 days a week, and a lab visit costs the same.

I had my full OGTT done at Intel Lab and had a great experience. The employees were very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating throughout the process. They explained each step clearly, which really helped ease my nerves. They also took my blood sample very carefully, especially since I’m afraid of needles, which I truly appreciated. Everything was handled professionally and smoothly. Highly recommended!
