Food Allergies 30

It means your immune system has made IgE antibodies to that food, which is sensitisation. Many sensitised people eat the food with no trouble, so a value on its own is not a diagnosis. Your doctor reads it against what happened when you last ate it, and may arrange a supervised oral food challenge, still the reference standard.

All 30 items are graded individually, from peanut, walnut, egg and milk to wheat flour, soy bean, rice flour, fruit and vegetables. A few run as pairs, such as chicken / mutton, crab / shrimp, cuttlefish / mussel and cod fish / salmon, so a reaction points at the pair and your doctor may follow up with a single-allergen test.

Neither. Antihistamines suppress the weal on a skin-prick test but leave allergen-specific IgE in the blood unchanged, and food in your stomach makes no difference to the measurement. Take the sample on an ordinary day, on whatever treatment you already use, at whatever time suits you.

The Food Allergies 44 panel repeats almost everything here and adds sesame, hazelnut, cashew, pistachio, coconut, gluten, lentil, broad and green beans, cow cheese, duck, tuna, date, olive and sunflower seed. One item runs the other way: cuttlefish / mussel appears on this panel only.

An allergy test. It measures IgE, the antibody behind immediate reactions such as hives, swelling, vomiting and wheeze within minutes to a couple of hours. The IgG measurement on our Food Intolerance Master 220+ panel is a different thing entirely and is not used to identify allergy.

Yes. It needs one draw and no skin preparation, which many children find easier than a skin-prick session, and it still reads clearly when eczema, dermographism or a daily antihistamine would make skin testing awkward. Ask your paediatrician to interpret the report before any food leaves the diet.

Not every food reaction runs through IgE. Coeliac disease, lactose intolerance, food additives, histamine-rich meals and fermentable carbohydrates all cause symptoms while IgE stays normal, and gut conditions can imitate a food trigger. Your doctor may suggest gut testing or a dietitian-led food diary.

Usually cross-reactivity rather than several separate allergies. Cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants, the reason bromelain, horseradish peroxidase and ascorbate oxidase sit on the panel, can light up many plant foods harmlessly. Pollen-food syndrome does something similar, giving an itchy mouth with raw fruit.

Only when something changes: a new reaction, a child growing up, or a doctor weighing whether an avoided food can return. Levels drift slowly, so repeating within a few months rarely adds anything. Reintroduction is a clinical decision, sometimes made under supervision, never one to attempt alone at home.
