HPV 32

It genotypes 32 strains of human papillomavirus from one swab or liquid-based cytology (LBC) sample: twenty high-risk types associated with cervical and other cancers, including 16 and 18, and twelve low-risk types that cause genital warts. Each type is reported separately by name.

Types 16 and 18 are the two watched most closely and, as this panel groups them, the high-risk set also covers 26, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 53, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68, 69, 70, 73 and 82. High-risk means associated with cell changes that can turn into cancer over many years, not that anything is wrong today.

No. Genotyping tells you which virus is present; cytology looks at the cervical cells themselves. The two answer different questions and are used alongside each other, and the interval between screens is set by your doctor, not by this result.

A positive means the virus is present now, nothing more. Most infections are cleared by the immune system without treatment, and cell changes take years to develop when they develop at all. What carries weight is whether the same high-risk type is still there when you are retested, so keep to the follow-up your doctor sets.

It can be. The vaccines are directed at particular types while this panel covers a wider set, so the result tells you where you stand across all of them. Vaccination also does not remove an infection acquired beforehand, and it does not change the cervical screening your doctor recommends.

Your doctor decides, and the reason is persistence: it is the same high-risk type appearing again after an interval that matters, not a single detection. Repeating sooner than the schedule you were given rarely changes anything, because a recent infection may simply still be clearing.

Low-risk types such as 6 and 11 are the usual cause of genital warts. They are not associated with cervical cancer, so a low-risk detection is not a reason for cancer surveillance, though visible warts can be treated in their own right, and your doctor will say whether that is worth doing.

There is no routine partner screening for HPV, and a positive says nothing reliable about when or from whom the infection came: it is very common and often silent for years. The useful conversation is whether your partner is up to date with their own screening and vaccination.
