Inside the Iron Profile
The Iron Profile is our entry-level iron deficiency test in Dubai: 2 tests (serum iron and total iron binding capacity (TIBC)) from one small blood sample taken at home or at the lab. It is aimed at people who feel tired, dizzy or unusually breathless, at women losing iron through heavy or prolonged periods, at vegetarians, vegans and regular blood donors, and at anyone who wants to know whether iron tablets have genuinely lifted their levels.
Serum iron on its own is a poor guide, because it swings through the day and rises after an iron tablet or an iron-rich meal. TIBC steadies the picture: it measures how much iron transferrin, the protein that ferries iron around your blood, could carry, and it typically rises when the body is short and hunting for more. From the pair the laboratory calculates transferrin saturation (the share of that carrying capacity actually in use) and reports it alongside the two measured values at no extra cost. Iron that sits low against a high TIBC and a low saturation is the pattern doctors associate with iron deficiency; other combinations point elsewhere, which is why the set is read together rather than line by line.
Both results come from a single serum tube. Serum iron is best drawn fasting and early, because levels drift over the course of the day, so plan an 8–12 hour overnight fast with plain water and take a morning slot. If you take iron supplements, leave that morning's dose until after the draw, and ask your doctor before pausing a longer course, since recent iron lifts the reading. A DHA-licensed phlebotomist collects free of charge anywhere in Dubai, 7 days a week, and your physician-reviewed Smart Report is ready within 24 hours.
This profile looks at iron in transit rather than iron in storage. If your doctor also wants your reserves, ferritin is ordered separately, and the Anemia Profile adds a full blood count and vitamin B12 when the question is why you are anaemic.

2 biomarkers, fully explained
From booking to answers in a few days
- 1
Take a morning appointment
Book a home visit or the lab any day of the week, ideally early. Iron levels shift across the day, so a morning sample is the one most easily compared with your next test.
- 2
Fast overnight, water only
Nothing to eat for 8–12 hours before the draw, and leave that morning's iron tablet until afterwards, since a fresh dose shows up in the blood and can mask a genuine shortfall.
- 3
A single serum tube
Your DHA-licensed phlebotomist fills one serum tube; both serum iron and total iron binding capacity are measured from it at our EIAC-accredited laboratory in Dubai.
- 4
Saturation worked out for you
Within 24 hours your Smart Report gives iron, TIBC and the transferrin saturation calculated from them, physician-reviewed and set against the laboratory reference ranges.
Frequently asked questions
Two measured markers: serum iron, the iron circulating in your blood right now, and total iron binding capacity, the amount your transport protein could carry, plus the transferrin saturation the laboratory calculates from them and prints in the same report.
Serum iron alone is too volatile to act on. TIBC changes slowly and usually moves in the opposite direction when iron is short, so putting the two together tells your doctor whether a low reading reflects a real shortage or just the hour at which blood was taken.
No. Ferritin measures stored iron, while this profile measures iron in transport, and the two answer different questions. Ferritin is available as a separate test: worth discussing with your doctor, as infection or inflammation can push it up even when stores are low.
Persistent tiredness, breathlessness on stairs that used to be easy, dizziness, pale skin, brittle nails, hair shedding, headaches and cold hands are the usual complaints. Restless legs and a craving for ice are less obvious signals that also warrant a check.
The Anemia Profile starts from the symptom: it adds a complete blood count and vitamin B12 to see whether you are anaemic and why. The Iron Profile is narrower and answers a single question about your iron supply.
Ask the doctor who prescribed them, as the interval depends on the dose and on why you were low. A recheck is usually done after some weeks or months of treatment rather than days, and the sample should be taken before that morning's tablet.
Both quietly tip the balance. Monthly blood loss removes iron faster than a typical diet replaces it, and the iron in plants is absorbed less readily than the iron in meat, so vegetarians, vegans and regular blood donors can drift low without any single dramatic cause.
A high result is often explained by a supplement or a fortified meal shortly before the draw. Where that is not the case, your doctor may look further into iron overload, liver conditions or recent transfusions, usually starting with a repeat sample taken fasting.
Yes to both. Come after an 8–12 hour overnight fast with plain water only, and choose an early slot if you can, because serum iron follows a daily rhythm and morning samples are the most consistent to compare over time.
AED 89 covers both tests, free home sample collection anywhere in Dubai 7 days a week, and a physician-reviewed Smart Report within 24 hours. If you are unsure whether iron alone answers your question, ask our care team.

I had my full OGTT done at Intel Lab and had a great experience. The employees were very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating throughout the process. They explained each step clearly, which really helped ease my nerves. They also took my blood sample very carefully, especially since I’m afraid of needles, which I truly appreciated. Everything was handled professionally and smoothly. Highly recommended!
