This panel covers 3 tests: 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH vitamin D), vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) and folate (vitamin B9). They are the deficiencies most often behind unexplained tiredness, poor concentration and low mood in otherwise healthy adults, and they are all read from one blood sample.

They work as a pair in DNA synthesis and red cell production, and a shortage of either enlarges red cells in the same way. The difference matters clinically: it is low B12 that classically damages nerves. Measuring both at once keeps a folate result from hiding a B12 problem that needs its own treatment.

Fatigue that rest does not shift, breathlessness on stairs, pale skin, a sore or smooth tongue, mouth ulcers, tingling or numbness in hands and feet, forgetfulness, low mood, aching bones, muscle weakness and hair thinning. None of these is specific, which is why measuring beats guessing.
