Inside the Lipid / Cholesterol Profile
A Cholesterol Test in Dubai is the simplest way to put figures on your cardiovascular risk, and this profile measures five of them from one blood sample: total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), directly measured low-density lipoprotein (LDL), very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and triglycerides. The report adds three calculated values at no extra cost: the cholesterol/HDL ratio, the LDL/HDL ratio and non-HDL cholesterol.
Cholesterol itself is not the problem; the particles carrying it are. LDL delivers cholesterol into the artery wall, where it builds up over decades, while HDL carries it back to the liver, so a high LDL and a low HDL pull in the same direction. VLDL carries triglycerides, and triglycerides rise with alcohol, refined carbohydrate and poorly controlled diabetes. Measuring LDL directly rather than deriving it from a formula matters most when triglycerides are raised, because the usual calculation becomes unreliable there. Non-HDL cholesterol (everything except the protective fraction) captures all the particles that contribute to plaque in one figure.
One blood sample covers the panel. Fast for 8 to 12 hours beforehand: triglycerides climb after a meal and pull the calculated values with them, and an overnight fast keeps this result comparable with your last one. Plain water is fine, and avoid alcohol for a day or two first. A DHA-licensed phlebotomist can come to your home or office anywhere in Dubai free of charge, 7 days a week, or you can book a lab visit instead. Results follow within 24 hours as a rule, in a physician-reviewed Smart Report.
Lipids respond to what you do, but slowly. A change in diet or exercise usually needs around three months before it shows, and a statin or other lipid-lowering medicine is normally rechecked some weeks after starting it or changing the dose. Your doctor reads these numbers with your blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, smoking and family history, because no single value decides the picture.

From booking to answers in a few days
- 1
Book an early appointment
Choose a home or office visit anywhere in Dubai, 7 days a week, or a slot at the lab. First thing in the morning is easiest, as the sample has to follow an overnight fast.
- 2
Fast, and skip the alcohol
Leave 8 to 12 hours after your last meal, drinking only plain water. Alcohol raises triglycerides for a day or two, so give it a miss before the test if you want a fair reading.
- 3
One tube, five markers
Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL and triglycerides all run from a single serum sample taken by a DHA-licensed phlebotomist, so the visit itself lasts only a few minutes.

Ratios calculated for you
Within 24 hours your Smart Report shows the five measured values plus the cholesterol/HDL and LDL/HDL ratios and non-HDL cholesterol, each reviewed by a physician.
Frequently asked questions
Five lipid markers from one sample: total cholesterol, HDL, directly measured LDL, VLDL and triglycerides, with the ratios and non-HDL cholesterol calculated for you.
They are transport particles heading opposite ways. LDL carries cholesterol out to the tissues and can leave it in artery walls; HDL collects excess cholesterol and returns it to the liver. A high LDL and a low HDL both push risk upwards.
The traditional estimate infers LDL from the other results, and it loses accuracy when triglycerides are high or the sample was not properly fasted. A direct measurement avoids that, which matters for anyone with diabetes or a raised triglyceride level.
It is your total cholesterol minus the protective HDL fraction, so it sums up every particle that can contribute to arterial plaque, including the triglyceride-rich ones. Many guidelines now treat it as a more complete risk figure than LDL alone.
Most often alcohol, sugary or refined carbohydrate intake, excess weight or blood sugar that is not well controlled. Thyroid problems and some medicines also raise them, and markedly high levels carry a risk of pancreatitis that needs prompt medical attention.
Adults over 35 due a routine review, anyone with heart disease or high cholesterol in the family, and people on a lipid-lowering plan. With normal results and no risk factors, once every few years is usually enough; your doctor may want it yearly.
Whether the dose is doing its job. LDL and non-HDL cholesterol are the values usually tracked on treatment, and comparing them with your pre-treatment figures shows the size of the response. Never stop or change a dose without your doctor.
Yes, particularly triglycerides, which respond quickly to less alcohol and less refined carbohydrate. LDL shifts more slowly and depends partly on inherited factors, so allow around three months between a genuine lifestyle change and the recheck.
Yes, 8 to 12 hours. Triglycerides rise after eating and distort the calculated ratios with them. Plain water is fine, prescribed medicines should be taken as usual, and morning appointments make the fast easier to keep.

I had my full OGTT done at Intel Lab and had a great experience. The employees were very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating throughout the process. They explained each step clearly, which really helped ease my nerves. They also took my blood sample very carefully, especially since I’m afraid of needles, which I truly appreciated. Everything was handled professionally and smoothly. Highly recommended!
