Lactobacillus keeps the vaginal environment acidic and unwelcoming to other organisms. The panel reports whether it was detected, not how much of it is there. If it is absent while Gardnerella, Atopobium or Mobiluncus are detected, that pattern points towards bacterial vaginosis rather than an infection caught from a partner, and your doctor reads it alongside your symptoms.

For chlamydia, gonorrhoea and the other urethral organisms, a first-catch urine sample is a well-established specimen and it spares you an intimate examination.
