The STD Core Screening (STD-7): 7-Pathogen PCR Panel is a focused genital-tract screen run by real-time PCR on a single urine sample. It covers Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the organisms behind most sexually transmitted urethritis and cervicitis; Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan parasite; and the four genital mycoplasma and ureaplasma species: Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum. It suits people with discharge, burning or irritation, and anyone wanting a confidential check after a new partner.
PCR looks for each organism's own genetic material instead of waiting for it to grow in culture, so these targets show up before symptoms appear, and in people who never develop any. This matters most for chlamydia and gonorrhoea: both are frequently silent, both respond to antibiotics, and both can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, epididymitis and fertility problems if left alone. Mycoplasma genitalium is a recognised cause of persistent urethritis and cervicitis. Mycoplasma hominis and the two ureaplasmas are different: they are often carried harmlessly as normal genital flora, so a detection is read alongside your symptoms rather than treated on sight.
The sample is urine: nothing invasive, and no fasting. Try not to pass urine for an hour or two beforehand, and collect the first part of the stream rather than a midstream sample: that first portion carries the cells the PCR reads. Collection is free at home anywhere in Dubai, seven days a week, or at the laboratory, and each of the seven targets is reported within 48 hours.
Read the report with your doctor. Reporting per organism lets treatment be aimed precisely, and partners are usually treated at the same time so the infection does not travel back. PCR can stay positive for weeks after successful treatment because it detects genetic material rather than living organisms, so your doctor decides when a repeat means anything.

Frequently asked questions
Seven targets from one urine sample: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum. Each organism is amplified and reported separately by real-time PCR.
For these organisms urine is a validated PCR specimen and far easier to provide, although in women a vaginal swab is the more sensitive sample. The first part of the stream washes cells out of the urethra, and the laboratory amplifies any pathogen genetic material those cells carry. Your doctor may still want a swab from a specific site if your symptoms are there.
A culture needs the organism to survive the journey and then grow on a plate; PCR copies and detects its genetic material directly. That makes PCR far more sensitive for chlamydia, gonorrhoea and trichomonas, and it is the only practical method for Mycoplasma genitalium, which barely grows in culture at all.
It is the panel aimed at those symptoms: urethritis and cervicitis are most often caused by the organisms on this list, and separate reporting lets your doctor treat the one actually present. If the trouble is urinary rather than genital, UTI Master 31 answers a different question.
Not automatically. Ureaplasma urealyticum, Ureaplasma parvum and Mycoplasma hominis are commonly carried without causing disease, and a detection in someone with no symptoms is often left alone. Your doctor weighs the finding against your symptoms, your partner's symptoms and any pregnancy before deciding.
No. Those are blood-borne and need serology rather than a urine PCR. The STD Basic Screening covers HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis from a blood sample, and the two panels are commonly booked together for a full picture.
It keeps all seven of these targets and adds seven more from the same urine sample: herpes simplex types 1 and 2, Treponema pallidum, Haemophilus ducreyi, Candida albicans, Gardnerella vaginalis and Group B Streptococcus. The STD Extended 14 is the wider sweep.
PCR turns positive earlier than an antibody test because it looks for the organism itself, but not instantly, so a very recent exposure may not show yet and your doctor may advise a repeat. After treatment, PCR can stay positive on residual genetic material, so wait for the interval your doctor sets.
